LAMM

Posted on the June 8th, 2009 under Camping, Outside, Photos, Run, Social/Event by Sam

Pictures from the LAMM (Lowe Alpine Mountain Marathon) in which my friend Clive and I took part in over the weekend. The location was kept a total secret (more or less) right up until the start. All we knew beforehand was that it was to be held somewhere in Scotland. This turned out to be Morvich in Kintail.

We did the B course, which involved 44km of distance and 3250m of ascent and descent over very mountainous and rugged terrain. It was a wonderful weekend spent out on the hills, with amazing scenery, and a satisfying feeling of freedom gained from carrying all the kit for the overnight stay the whole way. Scrambling up ridiculously steep slopes, pioneering routes through wilderness, running along tops and down isolated wide open valleys… More of this please!

I must say a huge thanks to Clive for getting me into this, and expertly navigating us round the course. Lots of fun!

Arenig Fawr and Camping

Posted on the May 5th, 2009 under Camping, Outside, Photos, Walk by Sam

I spent the bank holiday weekend camping in Snowdonia with my good friend Andrew. We arrived on Saturday evening and checked into a campsite near the Bryn Tyrch hotel in Capel Curig. I recently acquired a new one-man hyper light tent – MSR Carbon Reflex 1, so this was an excellent opportunity to put it through its paces. After several thirst quenching beverages in the Bryn Tyrch we retired to our tents, and received rain and strong winds during the night. My tent held up very well with no issues. On Sunday we were joined by some companions and did an excellent walk to the summit of Arenig Fawr – my first venture into the Arenig mountains. The weather was very annoying and interchangeable, hot/cold, windy/sunny/wet.. We celebrated the walk with a tasty curry in Bangor. During Sunday night I realised I’d been rather optimistic taking a 1-season sleeping bag and got very cold. Monday was essentially a wash out, the rain was perpetual until we returned to Chester. A day mostly spent in Penrhyn Castle near Bangor was the solution. Nice weekend.

Dolgellau Weekend, Cader Idris & Cregennen

Pictures from the Cheshire Walkers bank holiday weekend in Dolgellau. Walks included Cader Idris and an excellent loop around Cregennen lakes. A big thanks to all who put in the effort to organise the walks, accommodation, food and fun!

Cropredy 2008

Posted on the August 11th, 2008 under Camping, Holiday, Music, Outside, Run, Social/Event by Sam

Just back from the Cropredy folk festival. Was very good as was expected. Great to get the gang together again, for 3 days of nearly good weather (Saturday was very wet!). Apparently I got naked at one point, although that’s another story. I also did the Hash House Harriers trail run/hunt on the wet Saturday morning (on on!) which was absolutely splendid fun – huge thanks to the organisers! Following this we were treated to free pints of Wadworths ale (not the best post-run therapy!) and even got to meet Fred West (aka Mr Wadworth – the festival sponsor) himself.

The festival highlight for me was the surprise guest appearance of Robert Plant during Fairport’s set, who sung Led Zep’s Battle of Evermore as a tribute to Sandy Denny. I also very much enjoyed Mark Radcliffe’s The Family Mahone and Siobhan Miller/Jeana Leslie. Such a shame the weekend went so quickly. On Sunday I also explored Banbury a bit – rather a pleasant little place. Can’t remember how that nursery rhyme goes though.

Langdale Skyline, Challenge Walk

Photos from the Langdale Skyline Challenge Walk.

Many thanks to Steve for organising a great weekend. Poor weather did little to hamper two fun days of excellent walking in the Lakes.

Camping, Cnicht and the Moelwyns

Posted on the June 14th, 2008 under Camping, Outside, Photos, Walk by Sam

My friend Ian and I just spent the weekend camping and walking in Snowdonia. We stayed at the Gwern Gof Isaf Campsite in the Ogwen Valley. Facilities were good and may consider staying there again. Shame about the couple of problematic and anti-social young groups that turned up on the Saturday, spoiling everyone’s weekend with their drunken raving and playing of loud car stereos when they should be asleep!

On Saturday we did a quite a long walk up Cnicht and the Moelwyns. The view from these mountains is second to none. It was possible to see nearly all the 3000ft peaks of Snowdonia, the Berwyns, and also right up the Llyn peninsula. Photo’s I took from the weekend are below (click the image to see all).
